The Celestial Journey of the Soul by Bill Darlinson

  • In 2007, Bill Darlinson a Unitarian minister suggested the Jesus never historically existed, because he found in the Gospel of Mark astrological representations woven into the narrative in the proper zodiacal sequence. He published his thesis in the now out of print title The Gospel and the Zodiac: The Secret Truth about Jesus.

Darlinson's re-discovery however, falls prey to a materialistically minded interpretation of symbolism all too common of "men of faith" in our time, including Tom Harpur- the former Anglican minister who released the book entitled The Pagan Christ: Recovering the Lost Light in 2004.

What these men fail to apprehend is that multiple interpretations can truthfully co-exist, but by declaring the historical Jesus Christ to be solely an abstract representation of "human forces", they are all too eager to relegate all symbols of astrology to be mere abstractions of "cosmic forces", precluding the possibility of Jesus Christ and stars of having any essential "Being" or "Beingness" in themselves. This is not due to a lack of scholarship on their part, but to a loss of their spiritual intuition, their entrenchment to materialistic theology, paired with the new-age fashion to worship mechanical laws of nature and attribute them to a nebulous Being-less deity simply called "the universe". While they believe this represents open-mindedness on their part, pseudo-liberation from the fetters of instilled religious dogmas of youth, it in fact more so demonstrates that open-mindedness reaches its maximum potential only when there are no concrete spiritual facts in one's head at all.

Despite the harsh treatment given above, these books do have much to offer, if one is willing to re-insert the Beingness into the re-discovered mythologies and astrologies. It is this type of tact that is required to separate the wheat from the chaff, and if one is willing to do this then there is much to profit from these books. While The Gospel and the Zodiac is out of print, the astrological significance of the Gospel of Mark has been has been revamped in his new book titled "The Celestial Journey of the Soul".
